"Adventures Of A Late-Night Shopper"

It’s 11 o’clock and Hayes walks down to the corner IGA to pick up a loaf of bread so he’ll have toast for breakfast. There’s a short line when some guy wearing a ski-mask and brandishing a 9mm pistol swings open the door.

The masked guy yells out to the lady cashier, "Gimme all the money or you’re dead!"

The cashier is scared and screams, "Somebody help me. This guy is going to kill me."

Hayes reaches under his shirt and grabs the butt of his .38 snub nose. He carries a gun when he’s out late at night. Hayes steps out of line and slowly walks toward the checkout counter where the masked gunman is standing on top of the counter.

The robber looks down toward Hayes. When he sees Hayes holding a gun, he jumps off the counter over to the next checkout.

Slowly but steadily Hayes walks around to the next counter, all the while keeping his .38 pointed directly at the masked man’s chest.

Stopping only a few feet from the robber, Hayes orders, "Give me the gun or I’ll kill you where you stand!" Hayes cocks his gun.

The masked guy stares at Hayes for a moment, then stoops down and puts his gun on the counter, then climbs down to the floor. Without a word from Hayes, the guy pulls off his mask and flips it on the floor. "I’m Duwayne and I was just kidding," the guy says with a nervous giggle.

By the time the cops get there, according to TV-13 Eyewitness News in Indianapolis, Hayes has Duwayne lying face-down on the floor—foot on his back, gun in his ear.

At first, the two cops are a bit confused. They point their guns at Hayes and call out, "Drop the gun." Hayes complies, while the lady cashier and customers explain to the cops that it was Hayes who stopped the robbery and may have saved some lives.

Now, all Hayes wants is for the cops to give him back his gun.
