"What Got Elwood So Riled Up"

They say "timing is everything." That sure applies to three buddies from South Carolina who traveled all the way out to western Colorado on a hunting expedition. Their mission is great—but their timing is terrible.

Shortly after they leave Grand Junction for their hunting lodge a snow storm comes up. Our guys decide to wait out the storm at their hunting lodge. They settle in for some beer and cards. It’s during the card game that Elwood, one of the trio, gets into a serious argument with his buddies and ends up walking out of the lodge in a huff.

Hours later, the two buddies, still at the lodge, begin to wonder what happened to Elwood. They do a quick search around the lodge grounds but there’s no sign of Elwood.

Overnight the storm clears but the mountain roads haven’t been cleared. Our guys start hiking back toward town until they get within range of a cell phone tower. That’s when they call the sheriff. After considering all the options, the sheriff mounts a posse and a search is started.

Within a few hours the county cops and feds are joined by several volunteers plus the crew of a search and rescue helicopter. Elwood is now the object of a large scale manhunt.

Just as the search gets rolling along pretty good, the sheriff gets a long distance phone call from a lady back in South Carolina. She says, "Not to worry." Her husband, Elwood, is on a bus headed back home.

"Say what!" says the Sheriff to the remaining two buddies. They explain all about the quarrel during the card game and how Elwood left in a semi-huff and never came back.

Just four hours into the manhunt the 30-man search party is informed that Elwood is on a bus headed for home. The search is called off!

We’d tell you what some of the searchers said about Elwood’s hissy-fit, but this is a family newspaper and people aren’t supposed to say things like that. Still, we’d love to know what it was got Elwood so riled up.
