"A Bullet From Out Of The Night"

Gaylord drives his truck home after a night on the town. He’s been to the bowling alley, an all-night beer joint, and the Waffle House. Now, nearly sober, he steps out of his pickup, strides up to the door of his trailer and heads straight for bed.

About an hour after Gaylord hits the sack, a black Toyota drives into the yard. The passenger sprays the trailer with a Mac 10 (machine gun) and the car drives off. No telling what that was all about. Perhaps something that happened in town.

Five of the 9mm bullets strike the side of the trailer, but Gaylord is in such a deep sleep the sound doesn’t bother him at all. Later, as the sun comes up, Gaylord begins to stir.

As he opens his eyes, he’s startled to see blood on his pillow. The blood is coming from his head. Gaylord puts his hand on his wet forehead and feels a bullet just under the skin. He’s still bleeding.

Gaylord drives to the emergency room where doctors remove the bullet, dress his wound and call the police. Back at the trailer, cops examine the five bullet holes. The one that hit Gaylord lost most of its energy going through two walls.

The bullet still had enough velocity to pop Gaylord on the forehead and pierce the skin. He tells the cops he has no idea what the shooting was all about. He may be telling the truth—or maybe he’s lying.

Cops find shell casings in the yard and tire tracks but little else. Unless Gaylord can give investigators some kind of a lead to follow, this shooting will likely remain a mystery.

One cops tells Gaylord it’d be a good idea if he found a new circle of friends and a different place to go for entertainment.

Good advice! Let’s hope Gaylord was listening.
