"Midge & Brutus — K-9 Companions"

Midge is a female K-9 in Geauga County, Ohio. Midge and a contingent of other police dogs work for Sheriff Dan McClelland to help curb crime.

According to The Repository, Canton, Ohio, Midge’s claim to fame came in a recent drug bust. Here’s Midge in a suspect’s home, trotting by a chest-high book shelf when the pooch stops dead in her tracks. There’s a large framed family photo and some Cleveland Indians knickknacks on top of the bookshelf.

It’d be easy to pass this living room setting unnoticed, but it gets Midge’s undivided attention. What she hits on is a canvas bag filled with a large sum of marijuana.

What’s especially gratifying to Sheriff McClelland is that Midge is not only the newest member of his K-9 Corps but the smallest.

How small? Well, she weighs six pounds which is about average for a Chihuahua rat-terrier mix. The seven-month- old puppy looks like she’d be more at home in a movie star’s purse than running in the "heel" position with a bunch of cops. But little Midge has the skill and will of her peers — 100+ pound German shepherds.

Sheriff McClelland got the idea for using a small dog when he returned from vacationing in Canada. He noticed that U.S. Customs officers used beagles to sniff travelers’ luggage. Turns out some small dogs are easier to handle but have equal ability to sniff out contraband.

"That works for me!" the Sheriff must have thought. When Midge is working she wears a black vest with "Sheriff" emblazoned on the side. When she’s not working, Midge becomes a playful puppy at home — Sheriff McClelland’s home. He even has a hole in one of his Belgian rugs to show for Midge’s off-duty antics.

Midge (short for "midget") has been a public relations bonanza for the Sheriff. Law-abiding citizens love her. She’s even been adopted by "Brutus," a 125-pound German Shepherd veteran of the Sheriff’s K-9 Corps.
