"Not Part of a College Curriculum"

Lenny and Delores leave a dance and are on their way home. Driving along a dark stretch of country road the couple is suddenly startled by the sight of a flashing blue light behind them.

Lenny pulls over to allow the police car to pass, but instead, the blue light follows him off the road and onto the grassy shoulder.

A man and a woman get out of the blue-light car — it looks like a Jeep. The man walks up on Lenny’s side and the woman goes to Delores’ side.

Lenny and Delores are told to "get out of the vehicle and place your hands on the hood of the car." The couple does exactly as they’re told. Suddenly the man and woman scurry back to their Jeep and as they pull out past the startled couple, the woman throws a water bottle at Lenny and the man yells, "You’ve been punked, sucker."

Lenny drives into town and reports the incident to the police. The desk sergeant calls the highway patrol who reports there’s been a series of similar incidents in the area recently.

These "punkings" continue for a while. The victims usually give similar accounts of what happened. One enterprising cop takes a water bottle that was thrown at a victim and delivers it to the state crime lab. The lab finds enough of a fingerprint to make an ID, but there’s nothing in criminal records to match the print.

Then one night the cops get lucky. Moments after "punking" a young couple, the fake cops with the blue-light Jeep pull out directly in the path of two state troopers.

The arrested suspects are college kids who are easily identified by several of the victims. The prints on the water bottle match the girl.

Both are charged with unlawful use of a blue light and impersonating police officers. Turns out both kids are failing at school. Mostly they don’t even attend classes.

Jail terms cancel out their college careers. You’ve got to feel sorry for the parents who spent all that money for tuition. Maybe the kids were there on lottery scholarships.
