"A Christmas Eve Miracle"

This bizarre incident happened several years ago in Derry, New Hampshire. It was first reported by the Associated Press. Call The Cops! wrote about it in the year 2000.

It’s three o’clock on Christmas morning and most people in Derry are sound asleep. Except for a young woman who loses control of her car, crosses a lawn, hits a small rise which launches her over two parked cars and a pickup — then clears a set of telephone wires. The car is airborne for about 75 feet, according to Lt. Ed Meyers of the Derry Police Department.

Where’s the car land? On the roof of Spud Donovan’s house! Actually it doesn’t land on Spud’s roof, it plunges through the roof, demolishes two bedrooms and moves the house nearly a foot off its foundation.

The car comes to rest in the master bedroom with the front end resting on a dresser next to a double bed. Did I mention that Spud and his wife are asleep in that bed?

The commotion wakes up Spud, but it’s fortunate that he doesn’t sit straight up because the car’s undercarriage is at rest inches above his face.

Rescuers dig the Donovans out from under the rubble. Spud tells police he felt heat from the car’s engine.

It’s amazing that Spud’s wife, Joanne, sleeps through the entire episode. Spud wakes her up saying, "Honey, we’ve got company." Don’t you love it — humor in the face of danger.

Lt. Meyers says the couple is lucky. A large dresser stopped the car from falling farther. Otherwise, "they’d have been crushed," the lieutenant adds.

Luck had nothing to do with the saving of Spud and Joanne Donovan. "It was a miracle," says Joanne. She’s referring to the fact that standing there on top of the dresser, inches from the car, is a statuette of The Virgin Mary. Merry Christmas to the Donovans, God bless ’em.

Epilogue: You’ve heard the saying: "God protects babies and drunks?" Well, the driver of the car, a 20-year- old woman, was arrest for drunk driving, police said. She was only slightly injured.
