"A Bullet for Wendy"

This Thanksgiving Wendy has a lot to be thankful for. Her story, written by Larry Celona and Andy Geller, appeared in the New York Post on November 9th.

Wendy lives in Spanish Harlem in New York City. She shares her apartment with her live-in boyfriend, Butchie.

The boyfriend’s biggest problem is that he’s stopped going to school and also quit working. Wendy works as a teacher’s aide at a community college.

This living situation means that Wendy pays all the bills and forfeits some cash each day that Butchie steals from her purse. Mostly Butchie watches television and hangs out with his unemployed buddies. This guy’s a real gem.

Fed up, Wendy tosses Butchie’s stuff out on the street and changes the lock on her apartment. Are you surprised?

Within a few days, Butchie shows up at the apartment demanding that Wendy step out into the hallway. That’s when the ex-boyfriend pulls out a snub-nosed pistol and tells Wendy, "First I’m going to shoot you and then I’m going to kill myself."

Wendy’s plea for her life is answered by a gunshot to her right upper leg. She falls to the floor, and Butchie sits on her back, pressing the barrel of the gun against her head. He fires a shot!

Wendy continues to plead for her life. Butchie answers by firing two more shots, but the cheap gun jams and neither of the last two shots fires. Wendy lies very still — feigning death. Butchie runs from the building.

In the emergency room, as doctors clean the head wound, a small bullet falls from Wendy’s hair. The bullet broke her skin, but did not penetrate her skull.

Police said Wendy told doctors, "Only God kept that bullet from going through my head."

Butchie, who originally promised to kill Wendy and then himself, didn’t keep either of his promises. Police arrested him two weeks later, charging him with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

A very thankful Wendy is back at her job as a teacher’s aide.
