"Matt's Day Off"

Leonard and Alfie are cruising around town looking for a good time. They pass a house with lots of cars parked out front. "Must be a party," says Alfie, pulling up near the house.

The pair walk through the garage and into the kitchen. It’s a party, all right. Alfie and Leonard find a bottle on the counter and pour themselves a drink.

Next, they wander into the den where the music is loud and there are lots of people. They walk over to a guy with a friendly face and introduce themselves. The stranger shakes handssaying, "I’m Matt."

After about an hour, Alfie asks Matt if he’d like to get high. "Sure," says Matt. "What’dya have in mind?"

Alfie pulls out a baggie of psychedelic mushrooms, but Matt frowns. "No way man, those things make me sick as a dog."

Alfie pulls out a gram of cocaine. "Now you’re talking, kid," says Matt, "but what’ll we do when that runs out?"

Leonard gets on his cell phone and within 20 minutes there’s a knock on the front door. It’s Eric with fresh supplies.

Matt watches as Alfie and Leonard buy some additional drugs from Eric. At exactly the right moment, Matt nods to a few of his buddies, reaches into his pocket and pulls out his badge. "Howdy," says the narc, "I’m Matthew Gutwill, sheriff’s narcotics. You dudes are busted."

Let’s rewind the scene a bit before we go to the county lockup. If Leonard and Alfie had paid attention they’d have noticed that the host of the party and three other guys in the den were all wearing SWAT tee shirts.

There was a color photograph of the SWAT team on the refrigerator door which our boys had opened numerous times to get ice. Matt’s tee shirt has a pair of handcuffs inked on the front. It was a cop party—but so much for observation.

After the cuffs are snapped on, Alfie asks, "Are you the Matt Gutwill I’ve been hearing about? The narc that’s locking up everybody?"

"One and the same," responds Gutwill, then waves to uniformed deputies as they haul the prisoners away. Matt turns, shaking his head, "It’s hard to get a day off around this place."
