"Snow Trail Mishap"

Julian drives up to Vermont for a weekend of fun in the snow. He picks a great weekend. Lots of fresh snow on the slopes. Folks from New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts are pouring into Vermont.

Julian is there more for the barroom scene and ladies than for frolicking on the slopes. Regular skiers refer to Julian as "Mukluk the Magnificent," because of his garish costuming.

This weekend in Vermont Julian decides to play in the snow-but not on skis. He rents a snowmobile. Julian leaves the lodge Saturday afternoon but when he doesn't return by daybreak Sunday, folks at the lodge begin to worry.

Rangers, aided by a few seasoned skiers, organize a search party and by late Sunday afternoon they find Julian. He’s wrecked his snowmobile and sustained serious injuries.

Back at the lodge medics make every effort to revive Julian but it's just too late. The loss of blood and overnight exposure to subfreezing temperatures are more than the man can endure.

Back at the wreck scene, rangers take photographs to document the accident. That's when they find something that might explain what happened to poor old Julian.

There are bloodstains about 20 yards away from where Julian overturned in his snowmobile.

Rangers follow the blood trail for several hundred yards until they find something collapsed and nearly dead in a snow bank.

"It’s a bull moose," explains a ranger. "They very likely came up on each other unexpectedly. No doubt it was a tremendous shock to both of them because there’s hardly anybody up here in the wintertime, especially right after a heavy snowfall."

Authorities find it necessary to shoot the moose to prevent further suffering. Makes you wonder why the moose didn’t hear the snowmobile coming. Then one of the paramedics says, "alcohol was a factor in the collision."

You don’t suppose the moose...? Nah!
