"We’ve Been Missing You, Calvin"

The owners of the Riverboat Gift Shop have nearly completed renovating their store in the historic district of Natchez, Mississippi.

The Associated Press reports that masons working on the restoration project were reconstructing the shop’s chimney in the antebellum structure when they made a startling discovery.

Inside the chimney they found a skeleton! A fully clothed skeleton. Naturally, they called the cops. Adams County Sheriff Tommy Ferrell led the investigation and determined that the skeletal remains belonged to Calvin Wilson, age 27. Actually, Calvin’s identification cards were in a wallet in his back pocket. The medical examiner and a local dentist reported that their findings were consistent with the findings of the sheriff’s investigators.

Having found these skeletal remains in a chimney, the sheriff must have asked himself, "Is this an accidental death or is there foul play involved?" Turns out this case has a little bit of all of these elements.

It seems Calvin was using the chimney as a pathway to enter the Riverboat Gift Shop after hours for the purpose of burglary. Investigators believe that Calvin slipped and fell, headfirst, inside the chimney. He was seriously injured during the fall. Unable to call for help, Calvin was forced to just lie there, in an upside down position, where he finally died. And nobody knew it - until now.

Turns out the discovery of Calvin’s remains also aided in the solution of another case - a missing persons case. You see, Calvin was reported missing long before the discovery of the attempted burglary. Calvin’s skeleton was found on January 24, 2001. But he’d been reported missing 16 years ago - in 1985.
